Allotment Toilet – A Compact Portable Toilet for Your Plot

Spending a full day at the allotment is much easier when you don’t have to leave your plot just to find a toilet.

Popaloo is a compact portable toilet for allotments, designed for plot holders, gardeners and small growing spaces where permanent toilet facilities may be unavailable. It folds flat for storage in a shed or greenhouse, sets up in seconds and requires no water or traditional liquid toilet chemicals.

Keep it stored away when you don’t need it and have your own practical toilet available whenever you’re working on the plot.

Why Have Your Own Toilet at the Allotment?

Many allotment sites have limited toilet facilities — and some have none at all.

That can mean cutting a productive day short, travelling home or walking some distance simply to use a toilet.

For an individual plot holder who doesn’t need a permanent installed toilet, Popaloo offers a much simpler option. It can be stored compactly between visits and assembled when required, without plumbing, mains drainage or a water supply.

Why Popaloo Works So Well as an Allotment Toilet

Easy to Store in a Shed or Greenhouse

When folded, Popaloo measures approximately 420mm × 420mm × 90mm, so it takes up relatively little storage space between visits.

Lightweight & Portable

At approximately 4.28kg, Popaloo can easily be moved between your home, vehicle, shed and allotment plot.

No Water Required

Popaloo does not rely on a flushing system or water tank, making it useful on plots where access to water may be limited.

No Liquid Toilet Chemicals

The system uses Popaloo dry powder waste-gelling bags rather than traditional liquid chemical toilet fluids.

Comfortable & Strong

Once assembled, Popaloo reaches approximately normal UK toilet-seat height and has been weight-tested to 175kg / approximately 27 stone.

How the Popaloo Allotment Toilet Works

Using Popaloo at a festival is deliberately straightforward.

1. Assemble Your Popaloo

Remove the toilet from its carry case and assemble it in under 20 seconds.

2. Fit a Popaloo Powder Bag

Place one of the biodegradable powder bags securely inside the toilet before use.

3. Use Your Popaloo

The dry powder contained within the bag gels liquid and solid waste. Each bag can handle approximately 2.5–3 litres.

4. Seal & Dispose Responsibly

After use, seal the bag and dispose of it responsibly in accordance with the festival’s waste arrangements and local guidance.

A Portable Alternative to a Permanent Allotment Toilet

Larger allotment associations may choose to install permanent composting toilets, toilet cabins or other communal facilities.

Popaloo serves a different purpose.

For an individual plot holder, family or small shared growing space, it provides a personal portable allotment toilet without the cost, space or installation involved in creating a permanent toilet facility.

You can simply store it away when it isn’t being used and take it home if required.

Ideal for Long Days on the Plot

Having your own toilet can be particularly useful for:

  • Plot holders spending several hours at the allotment
  • Older gardeners who would prefer facilities close by
  • Families spending the day gardening together
  • Community garden volunteers
  • Remote plots without permanent toilet facilities
  • Greenhouses, polytunnels and larger private gardens
  • People who don’t want to cut a gardening session short to travel home

Popaloo can also provide a useful temporary solution while an allotment association considers longer-term facilities.

Create a Private Toilet Area on Your Plot

If your shed or greenhouse isn’t suitable for private use, Popaloo can be combined with one of our privacy tents.

The Private Convenience Pack combines a Popaloo toilet with a privacy tent, allowing you to create a compact private toilet area where appropriate.

The tent folds away when not required and can also be useful as a changing area or temporary storage space.

Ideal for Long Days on the Plot

Each Popaloo Portable Camping Toilet includes:

  • Popaloo folding toilet
  • 10 Popaloo powder waste bags
  • Biodegradable toilet tissue
  • Biodegradable refreshing towels
  • Durable carry case

Replacement powder bags are available separately in different pack sizes, making it easy to keep a supply at home or in your allotment shed.

Allotment Toilet FAQs

Find quick answers to common questions about the Popaloo portable toilet.

Yes, provided your allotment site’s rules allow it. Popaloo folds down to approximately 420mm × 420mm × 90mm, making it compact enough to store in many sheds, greenhouses and other dry storage areas.

Popaloo does not. It requires no connection to mains water, drainage, electricity or plumbing. It uses disposable dry powder waste-gelling bags instead of a conventional flushing system.
No. Popaloo operates without water, which makes it particularly useful for plots where running water or mains facilities aren’t available.

Popaloo can be used by more than one person, but each allotment or community garden should establish appropriate hygiene, storage and waste-disposal procedures for shared use.

It should only be used where there is sufficient space, stability, privacy and appropriate ventilation. Where an existing structure isn’t suitable, a dedicated privacy tent may be a better option.
Waste should be sealed securely and disposed of according to the rules of your allotment site and the waste guidance provided by your local authority. Do not assume that human waste can be placed in an allotment compost heap.

Your Own Toilet for Longer Days at the Allotment

Whether you’re planting, harvesting, maintaining your plot or simply enjoying a full day outdoors, Popaloo gives you the reassurance of having your own compact toilet nearby.
